Hintergrund
Background
Education and training are a key prerequisite for effective health promotion and are regarded as a cornerstone of capacity building within the public health system. International strategies, ranging from the Ottawa Charter to the Geneva Charter for Well-Being, emphasise the importance of qualified professionals in addressing current challenges such as social inequality, demographic change, the climate crisis and digitalisation. At the same time, there are heterogeneous training structures and professional profiles across German-speaking areas of the world.
Study design
This article provides examples illustrating the higher education and continuing professional development landscape in the field of health promotion in Germany, Austria and Switzerland (DACH).
Results
In the DACH region, there is a dynamic yet fragmented development of education and training in health promotion. Health promotion is predominantly integrated into public health, health sciences or management-oriented degree programmes; standalone training pathways and clearly defined professional profiles are rare. Universities of applied sciences play a central role in practice-oriented training. Curricula often focus on project management, the setting approach and evidence-based practice, whilst interdisciplinary themes such as advocacy, equity, climate change and digitalisation are inconsistently incorporated.
Discussion and conclusion
Interuniversity networks make an important contribution to professionalisation. To strengthen health promotion, clearer, competence-oriented training structures, well-defined professional roles and stronger institutional embedding are required. Competence frameworks, national and cross-regional networking, and cooperative capacity-building approaches offer key starting points for this.
